A way in
Listen from the beginning and let the interview keep its straight face. There is no need to decide what the can stands for before you have spent some time with him.

Why we chose it
Ian Chillag interviews Louis as if a forgotten store-brand can could answer back. Louis has waited through a birthday party, a road trip, and months in a refrigerator. Being opened would give him the purpose he longs for and end the life he has imagined. The joke keeps going, and then it turns serious. The next can in your fridge may still be a can, but it is harder to look past what people project onto the things they use.
What it may shift What being useful means when use means an ending.
When did Louis become more than a joke for you, if he did? What changes when being wanted and being used are almost the same thing?
