NASA Black Hole Plunge

Follow a simulated camera toward a black hole and watch familiar directions become difficult to read.

A way in

Choose the explained plunge on the NASA page, not the flyby or 360 version. Watch once through. Use NASA’s annotated visual walkthrough afterward if you want to examine a particular transition.

Free on NASA's site; choose the explained plunge (about 4:20) from several versions. English captions are available. The linked HTML page labelled "Complete transcript" contains only a few cues; NASA's annotated walkthrough describes selected visual moments. Expect strong simulated motion, distorted views, and the camera's simulated destruction.

Afterward

Why we chose it

The camera approaches a black hole while light takes routes that ordinary spatial intuition does not prepare you for. The explanations help you keep track of what changes as the view shifts. NASA’s visualization turns a model into a journey an observer can follow. This scene was calculated using a simplified model of a black hole. No camera made the trip.

What it may shift How gravity can change the view before it changes the destination.

Which change belonged to the camera’s motion, which to the path of light, and which to your expectation of what a place should look like?
