A crow can plan four calls without a word for four

Carrion crows learned to produce one to four calls on command, and their first call hinted at how many were coming.

A black crow perches on a diagonal branch with its beak open against a pale cream background.
The experiment

The crow appears to know how long the answer will be before it starts.

Trained carrion crows were shown cues for numbers from one to four and made that many calls, then signaled they were done.

The sound of the first call predicted how many calls would follow.

The deeper split

Number may come before number words.

The experiment separates quantity planning from symbolic language more cleanly than human behavior usually allows. The crow did not need a word for four to prepare a four-call sequence.

The study does not claim that crows perform human arithmetic. It shows that they can prepare a set number of calls without using a spoken number word.

Music and movement can also encode quantity through sequence.

What’s known, what’s not

Known

A 2024 Science study showed crows producing one to four calls in response to numerical cues.

Our read

Numerical planning and vocal control need not depend on human language.

Open

Animal counting may help separate number sense from symbolic language.
